Make Decorations For Your Table

Build a tablescape Start with slender but sturdy dried plant material from your garden or a craft or florists' supply store. 1. Select your base: a piece of plywood or wood, or a slate or terra-cotta floor tile. 2. Lay out a geometric hole pattern around the candle(s). For safety, ensure that nothing is too close to the flame. 3. Use an electric drill with a wood or masonry bit that is slightly smaller than the stems' diameter. 4. If holes are too small, whittle stems with a craft knife. Glue in place if desired. 5. Position candle(s); votives should be in glass surrounds, but larger candles can sit directly on base. Use long-necked gas igniters to light. Twigs Tree-like twigs edge a stream bed of green pebbles running down the center of a sealed 30-inch piece of redwood 1-by-4. Leaves "Skeleton" or "fossil" leaves (available at craft stores) overlap to form a pair of gossamer screens, flanking votive candles centered on a 12-inch square of black-painted plywood. Position leaves so they curve outward, making sure they’re at least 2 inches from the candles. Mini cattails Concentric circles of mini cattails surround a 4-inch-diameter candle. The outer cattails stand about 14 inches tall, while inner ones are 21 inches

Floor and Table Lamps Decorating Ideas 2011

Complement Your Decor

"Think of a lamp as part of the jewelry of a room," interior designer Judith Balis says. "You need to select the right piece to complement the rest of the room." When choosing lamps, consider the style you're going for in your home first. Is it traditional? Modern? Eclectic? In this bedroom, Balis adds a playful touch to a modern design with quirky, coral-base lamps.

Sleek Shades

If you're going for a modern or contemporary look, think simple and streamlined when selecting lamps. Currently in vogue, slim bases and drum-shaped shades can add height and drama to a space without overpowering its other decor. Design by Troy Beasley.

Timeless Appeal

Shades with a tapered shape tend to blend well with traditional decor. Designer Katie Leavy paired an antique ceramic lamp with colorful Indian textiles and a Chinese wall hanging for a look that's both worldly and classic.

Size It Up

"Like anything else in decorating, you want to be mindful of scale," Balis says. Make sure the size of your lamp is appropriate for its location. You don't want to put a massive lamp on a very small table — not only will it look disproportionate, but it might also be bumped into or knocked over. Likewise, a very small lamp will look out of place in a large room. As for the scale of the lamp itself, the shade should be one-half to three-fourths the size of the base and should hide the internal hardware of the lamp, Balis recommends. Design by Erica Islas.

Translucent vs. Opaque

Another important factor to consider when choosing a lamp shade is how much light you need the lamp to cast. If you want the lamp to illuminate an entire room or provide light for reading, a translucent shade is the best choice. However, if the lamp is strictly an accent piece, try an opaque shade for a dramatic look. Design by Joseph Pubillones.

Proper Placement

After selecting the right lamps, deciding where to put them is just as important. Generally, Balis likes to use floor lamps to illuminate corners and reading areas. "If you have a dark corner in a room, the simple addition of a lamp will work wonders for the way the room feels," Balis says. Table lamps are great for filling out the rest of the room, she says.

Up to the Task

In any room, make sure the lighting you choose is sufficient for the tasks and activities you want to accomplish there. Designer Shane Reilley illuminated this reading area with a geometric floor lamp — a great contrast against the wavy lines of the chaise.

Coordinate the Components

When pairing a lamp shade with a base, Balis says a good rule of thumb is to choose a shade that mimics the shape of the lamp itself. If you have a square base, try a square or rectangular shade. A round or drum-shaped shade works well with a round or bulb-shaped base, while a conical shade is a good fit for a tall, thin base. Design by Daniel Bodenmiller.

Choose Shades With Flair

"If you need to add color or texture to a room, an interesting lampshade will add just the boost you are looking for," Balis says. Look for a shade with a bold pattern, an interesting texture or decorative touches like beads or tassels. Design by Erinn Valencich.

The Importance of Lighting

Without proper lighting, even the most stylish space isn't truly complete. Every room needs a combination of general lighting, task lighting and accent lighting to set a mood and provide sufficient illumination. Table and floor lamps, which typically fall under the task lighting category, are especially important because they play both a functional and decorative role in your home. Size, shape and style all need to be taken into account when selecting lamps to suit both your lighting needs and taste in home decor. Design by Lin Lee.

Host a spooky yet elegant Halloween gathering with colorful, bold table settings and decorations. These easy Halloween ideas are sure to impress even the bravest of guests.

The Dark Black Raven

For an ominous look, RMSer michellelouise22 placed a black raven and spray-painted tree branches at the center of her fireplace mantel to represent Edgar Allan Poe's poem The Raven. She made the "nevermore" sign with vinyl letters, and the black candleholders and miniature pumpkins give an extra dark touch.

A Succulent Dinner Party

Host a lush dinner party with a vampire theme. Courtney Dial of Pizzazzerie started with a black velvet tablecloth and dressed it up with dark red accents. To resemble blood, Courtney hung cloth napkins from the table and added red drip candles on top of antique black candleholders. Add a mirror to the table to reflect the eerie candles, and stick "Blood Red" labels on the red wine bottles.

Skull Decor

Skulls fill this creepy dining room decorated by RMSer nyclq, who chose a black-and-white theme. She topped a gauze table runner with a delicate branch centerpiece that holds skull tea lights. The skull theme is carried through to the buffet table, featuring black candelabras and a mummy skeleton. The bright orange window panels are the only pop of color, which adds a dramatic touch to the space.

Pumpkin Carving Party

Carving pumpkins is one of the most interactive Halloween activities, so throw your own party filled with delicious treats and whimsical decor. Korinne Seel of Swank Sweets set a playful spider web tablecloth as the backdrop and enhanced it with inexpensive paper Halloween fans. All the edibles are from the local supermarket and customized with party printables by Anders Ruff Custom Designs. Set the pumpkins on cake stands to make them the focal point of the table.

Skeletons on the Table

You don't need gory decorations to spook your guests. RMSer debbiedoos set a frightening table with a metal skull centerpiece, red skull wine glasses and plastic bones on the place settings. To add more of a scare, she hung yellow CAUTION tape on the windows. This dinner table is sure to lead to a thrilling night.

Ahoy, Halloween!

Decorate in red, black and white for a pirate-themed Halloween party. Courtney spruced up vanilla cupcakes with pirate ship cupcake toppers. Fill an old rum bottle with root beer to act as decor and refreshments for guests, and serve other delicious treats in large treasure chests.

Magic and Whimsy

RMS user michellelouise22 chose a yesteryear theme for her Halloween decor. She made a kid-friendly centerpiece by placing fake red apples in a black "Poison" pot and painting one apple black to symbolize a poisonous one. The spider wine glass and hard resin book complete the supernatural look.

A Witch Gathering

Create a tall grim centerpiece by filling a three-tier cake stand with various Halloween decor. RMSer Tamgypsy filled the centerpiece with glittery skulls, bones, spray-painted Christmas ornaments and a silver witch's hat. She placed miniature skulls on the plates and brought crystal elements to the table with candle holders and wine glasses.

Rustic Christmas Table Decorations 2012 Ideas from HGTV

Bring a rustic yet elegant look to any holiday table with wool, knits, fresh greens and tons of woodsy texture.

By : Marian Parsons

Think Beyond the Linen Closet

Fold a vintage wool blanket and use it as a runner. It sets the color scheme and softens the warm wood of the table.

Bring Texture to the Table

A woven placemat adds rich color and texture to each setting. Remember to have an open mind when shopping: These mats were meant to be used on an Asian-style table, but they are right at home in a rustic theme.

Mix and Match

Vintage Bakelite flatware from slightly mismatched sets looks perfect side by side. Don’t be afraid to mix and match silverware, plates and glasses. It often looks more interesting than using pieces that are made to be a set.

Ditch the Paper Plates

Treat your guests to the luxury of using different plates and bowls for each course. Serve soup in simple wooden bowls, follow with a salad on a delicate ironstone plate and finish with dinner on a square wooden plate. A crystal goblet adds a touch of elegance, but the wheat pattern ties in to the natural theme.

The Season of Giving

A soup bowl doubles as a place card holder and carries an ornament for each guest to take home as a gift.

Tag It

A bundle of fresh cinnamon sticks is wrapped and tied in hemp twine. Write guests' names with permanent marker on a shipping tag and tie to a cinnamon bundle to assign seats. Arrange guests in a way that will encourage conversation and new friendships

Forget the Florist

Trim evergreen branches from your yard or an obliging neighbor's tree to serve as a centerpiece. Place fresh boughs in a galvanized bucket and swag a wooden bead garland around the greens. Use leftover Christmas tree clippings to fill in the base of the tablescape.

It’s All in the Details

Embellish a simple galvanized sap bucket with humble hemp twine and an inexpensive snowflake ornament. Wrap twine several times around the top of bucket, then tie together and create a loop to thread snowflake on. Tie one more knot to secure the snowflake.

Layer Upon Layer

Fluffy white snowflakes, knit "sweater" ornaments, twine-wrapped candles, fresh greens, pinecones and a stack of old books bring visual and textural interest to this centerpiece. Be careful where candles are positioned in relation to fresh greenery, and never leave candles unattended.

Keep it Natural

Egg-shaped fresh cranberries provide an unexpected pop of color against a craft store bird’s nest. Shop the farmers' market, garden center and the great outdoors to find accessories for this rustic table setting.
